OpenCPN Page 1 Abstract This document is the Software User Manual with instructions on how to install and use the OpenCPN software on a Windows system. This manual will also explain how to connect to the XB-8000 AIS unit, and how they work together. Finally, it will indicate how to install new charts, as well as some.
This version is a feature upgrade and maintenance release of OpenCPN.
OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic charting system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.
Since widespread introduction in 2008, OpenCPN has gained a solid reputation.
OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4' screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.
Some of the features of OpenCPN include:

Opencpn User Manual
What is OpenCPN?
OpenCPN is a navigational tool that can be used to plot routes and navigational charts. The software offers several different display options, including a mode that displays maps as single charts and one that displays them in a quilted mode. Users can view charts north-up or some other way and can even access a dynamic moving-map mode. Supported charts include BSBv3 raster charts, S57 ENC charts and CM93 vector charts. Additional chart types—such as nv-charts and BSB4 charts—can be supported by the software with the installation of some plug-ins.
Besides being used to navigate and plot routes, as mentioned earlier, it can be used for tracking vessels as well, with a special provision for naval vessel tracking. Waypoint navigation is possible, as is autopilot output. Users can set alarms too for particular anchor sites and route planning includes tidal prediction tools. Charts can be annotated on GPX layers.
The program can leverage OpenGL technology for improved performance on today’s computing systems and has a multitude of plugins available, from ones for Google Earth data support to a Voyage Data Recorder. It is a cross-platform program.
